Start ride in the city to the South Kuching City Hall – administering half of the city when the municipality was elevated to city status on August 1st, 1988. Continue to the second link bridge to Petra Jaya and cross the Sarawak River to the Malay villages lining the bank. Visit a school at the village and experience the bustle of the village. Stop by a Muslim cemetery at the village and learn about the Muslim death rituals. Then stop at a Malay family house for an authentic Malay lunch while cakes are being prepared for desert. Try your hand at preparing the Malay traditional snacks. Continue to Fort Margherita built in 1876 and named after Renee Margaret, the wife of Sarawak’s second white rajah, Charles Brooke and the Orchid Garden. Drive through a few other Malay villages on the way back to city and pass by some old original Malay houses more than 100 years old made entirely out of iron wood.
